"Although I usually paint exclusively from photos I’ve taken myself, this photo of a man reading a newspaper in front of the Neptune Fountain in the Piazza Novana in Rome was given to me by a friend. It had been in my photo file for many years and when I happened across it I decided to accept the challenge. In the photo the gentleman was not smiling but his face was illuminated by the sunlight hitting the paper in front of him. The big grin, the pigeon and the statue behind him also laughing and looking over his shoulder, well they were my own embellishments. This painting makes me smile – and I hope it does that for anyone who views it.”"
